Yesterday, I watched another video of a Palestinian father sobbing, while carrying the lifeless body of his son who had just had part of his head blown off by an Israeli sniper. Since October 7, 2023, the US-Israeli Genocide in Gaza has killed an estimated 680,000 of our brothers, sisters, and children in Palestine (if this number is confirmed, 380,000 of those murdered are infants under five). In order to avoid punishment for their unspeakable crimes (incarcerating and raping children and detainees (sometimes with dogs and sticks), weaponizing starvation, incremental Genocide, etc.), Israel and the United States are now trying to dismantle the International Criminal Court (ICC). In fact, most have doubled down on profiting and cheerleading for the genocide, and praising the US War Machine. One of the biggest A-holes in sports, talk show host Stephen A. Smith (est. net worth, $85 million), recently declared on national television (2.5+ years into the Israeli Genocide), that he loves Israel. How do you like that? At about the same time, basketball star Lebron James (est. net worth over $2 billion) also publicly stated that he had heard “only great things” about the genocidal state of Israel. Clearly, the National Basketball Association (NBA) has an “Israel problem”, as many of its players and team owners continue to profit from the US-Israeli Genocide in Gaza as well. As per journalist Alan Macleod, “Many of the National Basketball Association’s biggest stars are quietly allying themselves with the State of Israel, making official visits to the country, meeting IDF troops, and investing in its national security industry. Meanwhile, individuals criticizing Israel and supporting Palestinian liberation have been condemned, threatened, and marginalized. This has caused widespread consternation and push back from the league’s largely progressive fan base. The NBA, in other words, has an Israel problem.” Do you see the pattern?

USA: A Culture of Celebrity, not Morality
I grew up loving sports but the depraved sports-industry officially lost me more than a decade ago with its for-profit ties to the US War Machine, Big Ag, Big Pharma, and our toxic food system. When I was little, my father and brother must have played catch with me a hundred times, both for fun, and to help me with my skills. I went to Fenway Park and the Boston Garden many times as a kid to watch the Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics play, and I loved it. I was even invited to Patriots practices by older childhood friends due to my apparent cuteness at the time (cute kids, I was told, were much more likely to get athletes to stop, and sign autographs!). Any good looks I may have had were short lived, but my loyalty to the Boston sports teams remained intact. Despite seeing through most of the Bull-Sh*t of sports as the years passed, I was still somehow sucked in again with the Boston sports teams’ title runs in the early 2000’s. I suspect that my continued loyalty to the teams that I grew up rooting for were tied to the memories of my early childhood, and with the fact that sports were one of the few topics that my father and I could discuss peacefully.
Sports can be great. Playing outdoor games of any kind can be a ton of fun, and keep kids fit, while also teaching lessons in teamwork, humility, health, and leadership. They can also be handy social currency when traveling abroad. Unfortunately, I can no longer stomach most sporting events, and all the manipulations of big business & pro-military propaganda that surround them. This includes the financial opportunism of dull soulless members of the sports industry fraternity (like the aforementioned Stephen A. Smith, David Portnoy, and countless others), racist team/plantation owners (like Robert Kraft & Jerry Jones), spineless athletes/coaches (like Lebron James, Lionel Messi, Bill Belichick, Michael Jordan & Tom Brady), and the relentless predatory marketing that specifically targets and exploits children (see the US War Machine, fast food restaurants, junk food manufacturers, Big Ag, and Big Pharma).
Sports as a Weapon of Mass Distraction (WMD)
I am also saddened by US sports fans who view their teams’ success as a life and death issue, and yet could not care less about humanity, and the US-Israeli Genocide in Palestine, as well as the hegemonic US War Machine’s mass-murdering onslaughts in Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, Lebanon, and elsewhere (let alone what’s happening domestically, and to animals, and our only planet). Most are not necessarily bad people, they are just products of an empty American culture, and an education system that focuses on teaching students how to be obedient employees, and consumers, and NOT critical thinkers with an eye for truth & justice. As per John Taylor Gatto, “By discouraging critical thinking, (US) schools ensure a docile and compliant population.”
The popularity of US sports exemplifies how the United States is a culture of celebrity, not morality. Should anyone be surprised to learn that the average American reads less than one book per year? Moreover, A 2019 study by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists found that a third of Americans would be in favor of a preemptive nuclear strike on North Korea, even if it killed a MILLION innocent people! WTF? Is North Korea a threat? They do have a small number of nuclear weapons that are kept as a deterrent (to insane empires like the US), but according to the Geopolitical Economy Report, North Korea’s entire military budget is less than the NYC Police Department’s budget. So, the answer would be NO, North Korea is not a threat. Why then are so many Americans grossly misinformed, full of hate, and quick to subscribe to the latest round of US propaganda? Answer: (1.) Our broken education & political systems, (2.) a largely vapid celebrity & sports obsessed culture, and (3.) a corporate media that serves only the US Empire. Did you know that there are 32 National Football League (NFL) teams, and except for the Jacksonville Jaguars & Green Bay Packers, they are all owned by white billionaires, who are overwhelmingly conservative & racist? In fact, the Jewish supremacist owner of the New England Patriots, Robert Kraft (est. net worth of $13 billion), called Columbia University student protesters anti-semitic for standing up for our brothers & sisters in Palestine, and speaking out against the US-Israeli Genocide in Gaza. Imagine that. According to journalist Alan Macleod’s excellent piece, Follow the Money: How Israel Linked Billionaires Silenced US Campus Protests, “Billionaire businessman and sports executive Robert Kraft, for example, publicly announced he was cutting the university (Columbia) off from his lavish funding over its failure to suppress the protests effectively enough. “I am deeply saddened at the virulent hate that continues to grow on campus and throughout our country,” he said in a statement, claiming that Columbia was not protecting its Jewish students. The turning point, Kraft said, was watching a publicity stunt by Shai Davidai, an Israeli-American academic at Columbia, who claimed his access to campus was revoked. Davidai had previously called the student protestors “Nazis” and “terrorists” and called for the National Guard to be set upon the encampment, obliquely referencing the Kent State University Massacre while doing so. Kraft is one of Columbia’s most important donors, giving the institution millions of dollars, including $3 million to fund the Kraft Center for Jewish Student Life. Despite the World Cup tournament being rigged for the US & Argentina, Spain still won, thankfully. How corrupt is FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino? Despite committing a genocide, and mass-murder campaigns in Iran (including the massacre of 168 school children and teachers in Minab), and elsewhere, the United States was not only allowed to play in the tournament, but celebrated too!
According to journalist Jules Boykoff: “So, originally, FIFA said that they would take in $11 billion in revenue from this tournament alone. That itself would have been more revenue than any sporting event in the history of sporting events. Instead, their projections are more like $15 billion. Part of that is because they really catered to the luxury classes. I mean, let’s not forget that the World Cup is an opportunity for a privileged sliver of the global 1% to come together, to sit in the luxury boxes, to appear on screen on TV, to cut deals behind the scenes. And that’s exactly what this World Cup was about.
Essentially, FIFA is keen to turn the people’s game into a game for the 1%, a game for the plutocrats. Going into this final, the average ticket price, according to SeatGeek, was $12,000. Twelve thousand dollars! Who can afford that? There were tickets along the sidelines that were selling for $1 million a piece…Claudia Sheinbaum (Mexico’s President) did the right thing. She gave away some of her free tickets to people who would otherwise never be able to attend a match. And you saw from the two leaders, in Sheinbaum and Trump, a sharp contrast, Sheinbaum using the opportunity to stay in tune with her own politics, and Trump using the opportunity to essentially weaponize the event for his political advantage. More specifically, everybody knows about the rescinded red card heard round the world, where U.S. forward Folarin Balogun received a red card in the match against Bosnia, and President Trump called his BFF over at FIFA, the president, Gianni Infantino, and pressured him to overturn the penalty for that red card, thereby politically intervening. It should be noted that when other countries have politically intervened in the machinations of FIFA, they’ve been suspended, whether it’s Pakistan, whether it’s Kenya, whether it’s Zimbabwe. They paid a price. And so, you can see that the Trump administration was active weaponizing. As if to go further, the Department of Homeland Security’s X feed issued a number of racist and anti-immigration tweets using the U.S. men’s national soccer team players as their political backdrop. They issued a tweet that read, “One nation. One homeland. One team.” And if that sounds like Nazi propaganda, that’s because it essentially is. It mirrors Nazi propaganda from the 1940s. One of their slogans was “One people. One realm. One leader.”

One point that I absolutely think is crucial to note here is that while many of us were engrossed in this World Cup, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ramped up its violent deportation machine. During the actual World Cup, we saw a surge from ICE detentions. At one point, they were averaging 2,000 detentions a day, right in the thick of the World Cup. Now, this isn’t quite the 3,000-a-day fever dream of Trump’s assistant white nationalist Stephen Miller, but it’s still almost double what was happening before the month that the tournament started. And so, the World Cup helped Trump advance his agenda. It deflected attention from a lot of people away from his brutal immigration program, and it sets him up well to do the same in Los Angeles in 2028 when the United States hosts the Summer Olympics.”

While Israel & the United States are nearly 3 years into committing one of the worst crimes in human history (the Genocide in Gaza), the soulless piece of human garbage, Lebron James, had this to say about the Genocidal state of Israel: “Hopefully someday I can make it over there. Like I said, I’ve never been over there, but I’ve heard great things.” Imagine that. Lebron James, is yet another example of how US government & corporate media propaganda dumbs down Americans. Like millions of others, James is the product of a US public school system that emphasizes obedience, and consumerism, rather than critical thinking. In other words, he is likely, at best, a “limited thinker” at this stage of his life, with a huge platform, and a net worth that exceeds $2 billion! Hopefully, Lebron James will soon open a book to actually read, rather than for the purpose of a photo-op! As per Alan Macleod, “LeBron James presents himself as an activist athlete. An outspoken supporter of racial justice movements, he has used his platform to support liberal causes, such as voter registration and to oppose police killings. Idolizing Muhammad Ali, he also very publicly allowed himself to be photographed at a press conference reading the autobiography of Malcolm X (although he was barely able to answer even basic questions about its content). Surprisingly, then, the four-time NBA Most Valuable Player has expressed his strong support for Israel, and stayed silent on its assault on its neighbors. In the wake of October 7, James was one of many celebrities to rush out statements of solidarity with Israel and condemnation of Hamas. “The devastation in Israel is tragic and unacceptable. The murder and violence against innocent people by Hamas is terrorism,” he wrote, sending his “deepest condolences to Israel and the Jewish community,” while suggesting Hamas were a “hate” movement. In the two-and-a-half years of slaughter that has followed it, however, the word “Palestine” has not passed LeBron’s lips, as the star has stayed silent in the face of the unfolding human rights catastrophe. I actually knew of Mr. Paylor, and thought that he was one of the best in the sports announcing business (he was warm, authentic, and co-hosted a Yahoo Sports football podcast). I did a little research and could only confirm a suspected heart attack as the cause of death, but I did learn that Mr. Paylor appeared to be burdened with obesity as well. As a result of knowing what we know about the Standard American Diet (SAD), and the power of plant-based nutrition, I reached out to the Bill Simmons team, as the hypocrisy and obvious problems with The Ringer’s advertisers/sponsors couldn’t have been more clear (consuming the Standard American Diet (SAD), is the #1 cause of death & disability (and heart disease) in the United States (not to mention the enormous & irreversible harm a single “SAD” diet does to animals & Mother Earth). I was respectful and even complimentary (I think), but nobody ever responded. They don’t care, and like countless others in the sports mass media landscape (and most of the celebrity athletes themselves), they probably never will. I have since learned that Bill Simmons owns at least four multi-million dollar homes, including a $16 million mansion in Los Angeles, as well as a $10 million “cottage” in Malibu. In the words of the great Mel Brooks, “It is good to be the King”, or rather, it is good to be in bed with the very industries & advertisers that are causing so much suffering, death, and damage in the world.

The US arms industry is like a cancer that relentlessly expands due to zero accountability (the Pentagon hasn’t passed an audit in years), and record arms sales and military contracts (with significant funds flowing to major contractors like Lockheed Martin and RTX). STG’s portfolio, is run by the largest stakeholder of the Boston Celtics, Bill Chisolm, and includes defense, and national-security adjacent data/software companies (e.g., Govini, Netwitness, RSA). As a result, nobody should be surprised that a Celtics ownership group that profits from war, would decide to dump a great player, who is also a bright, inspiring, independent thinker like Jaylen Brown (regardless of the huge loss to the team & the local community).

Sports gambling in the United States is a massive, multibillion-dollar industry with “legal” sports betting revenues now exceeding $14 billion per year. How bad is it? One out of five US college students say they’ve tapped into money set aside for tuition so that they can fund their betting. According to Business Insider, “Our findings suggest that sports betting can have dramatic implications for household financial stability,” the researchers wrote. Another study…found that the likelihood of a personal bankruptcy filing climbs by roughly 25% when states expand from in-person-only sports betting to online wagering.”
The for profit sports industry is despicable to begin with, and the ugliness of sports gambling only adds fuel to the fire. As per journalist Matthew Cunningham Cook, “We just unmasked a disturbing new actor trying to buy our elections: the sports betting lobby. Our new story, co-published with the Center for Media and Democracy, reveals that a SuperPAC funded by DraftKings is the top outside spender in Illinois legislative races, deploying more than $1.2 million to defeat progressive and socialist candidates. Sports gambling is a growing public health crisis. But just like Big Tobacco once did, the industry is betting it can evade new taxes and regulations by flooding our elections with dark money.”

15. Rodeos & Horse Racing – When Abusing and Killing Animals is considered a “Sport”
The majority of mainstream rodeo fans/participants are white, conservative, and more likely to support racist policies that violate human rights. In addition, according to Northeastern University and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, people who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against humans.
In other words, rodeos suck.
Please say NO to rodeos. As per PETA (PETA does great work for animals, but is despicable on human rights), “Countless animals have paid with their lives to satisfy humans’ desire to play cowboy in events such as calf roping, bull riding, steer wrestling, and bronco riding. Cattle and horses may be zapped with electric “hot shots” so that they’ll charge out of the chute, calves’ necks are twisted as they’re violently slammed onto the ground, and horses are viciously spurred into bucking. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rules allow the shocking of horses who are slow to come out of the chute—participants call them “stallers…Animals used in rodeos have suffered fatal injuries, including broken backs and necks, heart attacks, and aneurysms. Those who manage to make it through unscathed are given little time to rest or recuperate. They are loaded into trucks, hauled to the next event, and forced to participate over and over again. When they become too old or worn out to continue, “retirement” is often a one-way trip to the slaughterhouse. The late Dr. C.G. Haber, a veterinarian who spent 30 years as a federal meat inspector, saw many animals from rodeos sold to the slaughterhouses he inspected. He described seeing animals “with six to eight ribs broken from the spine and, at times, puncturing the lungs,” in addition to “as much as two to three gallons of free blood accumulated under the detached skin…”

Horse racing is Horse Killing.
The horse racing industry claims to love their horses like their own children, but animal rights advocates say that children aren’t put down as soon as they break a leg. Horse racing is not a sport, and I can only think of one word for the athletes, celebrities, and dolts who attend these annual turd-fests in their wide brimmed hats and over the top fashion ensembles. Sad. The pushback from the establishment is that the unique attire is fun for the attendees, and is supposed to bear luck. Really? Fun and Luck for who? It doesn’t matter how anyone dresses it up and pretends otherwise, animal exploitation sucks, and horse racing is horse killing.

A nauseating 2026 Daytona 500 commercial conflates the sport of car racing with the US military. It is yet another form of predatory recruiting that attempts to deceive young people into thinking that the military is cool. While over 60% of Americans are living check to check, the US War Machine is spending billions of US tax payer dollars in an effort to convince young people that killing innocent people is a great way to “be all you can be” (the US military spends over $1 billion per year on deceptive advertisements). Incidentally, ICE also targets the same demographic, as a disproportionate number of racing fans also tend to be racist gun enthusiasts. What a country!

Kareem Abdul Jabbar: Not all celebrity athletes place their brand and merchandi$ing over conscience. A few years ago, the cerebral NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar sold memorabilia from his Hall of Fame career for $3 million. In an ESPN article, Kareem wrote the following statement: “When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple: Sell it all…Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold plating celebrating something I did a long time ago, I’d rather look into the delighted face of a child holding their first caterpillar and think about what I might be doing for their future. That’s a history that has no price.” Kareem’s net worth is estimated to be about $20 million. Incidentally, Kareem Abdul Jabbar is one of my favorite athletes, and I grew up a Celtics fan! It is a shame that so many younger players don’t seem to look up to him (no pun intended), or others like him for guidance and support.

Direct Action Everywhere: If people cared about animal welfare as much as they care about their favorite sports teams and celebrities, then everyone would be vegan. I was recently reminded of how dim-witted athletes & sportscasters can be, as well as the corrupt state of the sports and entertainment industries, when I heard a few “sports experts” try and discuss issues other than sports (in this case, human & animal rights). Lest anyone forget how clueless most athletes and sports announcers can be on issues that matter! For those who think independently, sports broadcasts are a hard watch because of the bombardment of offensive commercials, and the on air promotion/glorification of the following: (1) US military/greed/capitalism (2.) animal harming & disease causing foods (3) phony baloney pink ribbon messaging (4) Big Pharma, and (5) the cabal of former athletes who are empty headed vomits (see Brett Favre, Michael Jordan, etc.). Kudos to the animal rights activist from Direct Action Everywhere, for fighting the good fight, and filing charges against the muscular football player (who was wearing a helmet and padding), who aggressively slammed him to the ground as he was running across the field in an effort to draw attention to the horrors of animal abuse. Of course the ignorant but well paid sports announcers mocked the activist, and celebrated the player who assaulted him and could have caused serious injury or worse.

And kudos to more animal rights activists from “Direct Action Everywhere” for exposing the billionaire owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the animal factories he owns, which cause unimaginable suffering to millions of innocent animals. The activists interrupted the play of multiple basketball games and were called “insane” and “crazy” by the announcers, and by those who posted videos on social media. Meanwhile, sports fans inside the stadium, in their infinite wisdom, booed the protesters and yelled “you suck” and “send her to jail” (most likely as they chomped down on their disease causing and animal/planet destroying “food”). Of course I had to hear of the protests through animal rights organizations, as ESPN and SI.com ignored the story entirely lest they offend any of the billionaire owners and their advertisers. Yahoo Sports at least ran a very safe and vanilla report.

Marathon Record: Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe is First Ever to Finish a Marathon in Less than 2 Hours!
Sabastian Sawe: Finally, I have to end on the most positive, and amazing note. I have run 3 marathons, and I can say that Sebastian Sawe’s record breaking run of less than 2 hours, is the single most awe-inspiring athletic accomplishment in my lifetime. Wow, and congratulations to Mr. Sawe! Apparently, he had toast, honey, and tea for breakfast on the morning of his incredible feat.

The Bottom Line? Whether it is capitalism that leads to greed, or greed that leads to capitalism, we live in a society where too much is never enough. When will it end, and how do we stop it? The entire sports industry has been unforgivably SILENT (or worse) on the US-Israeli GENOCIDE in Occupied Palestine. The business of sports is mostly made up of greedy, soulless cowards who are somehow in bed with the US military. It’s a shameless, shitty part of our society that seduces athletes, coaches, and the public with fortune, fame, and an unrelenting lust for more of everything. And everyone who participates is owned, for the most part, by white/Jewish supremacist billionaires and their goons (see the ghoulish Robert Kraft, Donald Trump, and Gianni Infantino for starters). The industry also employs equally vapid, shallow, “sports” announcers & influencers like the detestable Stephen A. smith, Dave Portnoy, and Bill Simmons, all of whom profit greatly from life destroying gambling companies like FanDuel & DraftKings, as well as other powerful “industries” that devastate humans, animals, Mother Earth, and even threaten our chances of survival. For real. This shameless whirlwind of cruel empty-headed tools flourishes, while US homelessness, poverty, suicide rates, and food insecurity are at all time highs, and the hegemonic US empire continues to smash international law, and mass-murder our brothers, sisters, and children all over the planet. Sports as a Weapon of Mass Distraction (WMD) to launder human rights abuses, and dumb down the masses? You bet.
