The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS, NYC Zoos) Operates like a Criminal Enterprise

Did you know that the New York Zoological Society (now dishonestly called the Wildlife “Conservation” Society) was co-founded in 1895 by a racist/eugenicist trophy hunter named Madison Grant? In an effort to sound more important, confuse people (less accountability), and distance itself from its founder (most likely for marketing purposes), the NY Zoological Society decided to change its name in 1993 to the more impressive sounding Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

The Wildlife Conservation Society’s brazen use of the word “Conservation” is a deliberate misnomer that still cracks me up (laughter is less messy than crying). The WCS’s attempt to mislead the public, reminds me of how the United States (in efforts to justify its ongoing wars of aggression, and other unspeakable crimes) claims to be spreading “Democracy” and “Freedom” as it starves our neighbors in Cuba, bombs Iranian schoolchildren, and commits a Genocide in Palestine. As per George Orwell’s 1984, “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Force.” A far more accurate title suggestion for WCS (which is headquartered at the Bronx Zoo) would be the “Wildlife Cancellation Society”, because that is what the WCS does. In its unrelenting pursuit of profit$, and relevance, the WCS cancels our hopes for minimizing human & animal suffering, healing Mother Earth (for the next thousand generations), and creating a world of peace, and justice, for ALL beings.

The Wildlife “Conservation” Society is, in many respects, an organized crime group, that owns and operates 5 New York City Zoos (Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and the Brooklyn Aquarium). It is from this heinous entity, and its zoos, where WCS (1.) forcibly confines and displays animals for profit (which is illegal, and a form of abuse in some parts of the world), (2.) sells tons of health harming body parts from tortured animals to children and families, mostly in the form of disease causing junk-food, (3.) lies to children, visitors, and its younger employees about many topics, including animal abuse, animal factories, the toxic food it sells, and the devastating impact that animal agriculture has on our only planet’s future, (4.) expresses contempt on a daily basis (sometimes aggressively) for animal rights groups, educators, and other compassionate individuals who are concerned about WCS’s abhorrent treatment of animals (e.g., see Patty the elephant from the Bronx Zoo for starters), and (5.) allegedly funds human rights abuses (including torture, rape, and murder) in other parts of the world (yes, you read that correctly). If WCS (NYC Zoos) was serious about conservation, they would not lie to children, sell Farm Factory (Animal Factory) “foods” in its zoo restaurants, cafes, and food trucks (Factory Farming is one of the worst crimes in human history), torture animals, and commit human rights abuses overseas.

Top Six Reasons for NOT Visiting a WCS New York City Zoo

1. The Bronx Zoo’s Reluctance to Release Patty the Elephant to Sanctuary

The Bronx Zoo announced in 2006 that they were going to end their elephant program. And of course, being the Bronx Zoo, they never did. Most of their elephants have since died off, except for one magnificent female named Patty. Species Unite does terrific work and they have sent the Bronx Zoo a petition of over 50,000 signatures asking that Patty be transferred to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. As per Species Unite, “Patty is a 57-year-old Asian elephant who was stolen from the wild in India at just three years old and sold to the Bronx Zoo for $6,000. In her five decades of imprisonment, she has endured profound grief and now years of solitude. Her only calf, Astor, was born in 1981 and died from elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus before his second birthday. In 2018, her longtime companion Maxine succumbed to cancer, leaving Patty almost entirely alone…For more than five decades, Patty the elephant has been confined to a small enclosure at the Bronx Zoo…This isolation is especially devastating because elephants are among the most social beings on the planet. In the wild, female elephants live in close-knit family herds, forming lifelong bonds, raising calves together, and relying on constant companionship for their emotional well-being. Depriving an elephant of social contact isn’t just unnatural—it causes profound psychological harm. Research shows that captivity can lead to trauma-induced neurological damage, resulting in chronic stress, depression, aggression, and repetitive behaviors known as zoochosis…Now, for the first time, there is real reason to hope that Patty’s story could have a different ending. This week, the Bronx Zoo announced that it is considering transferring 57-year-old Patty to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, where she could finally spend the rest of her life with the space, companionship, and autonomy every elephant deserves…” *Note: Even if the Bronx Zoo steps up and does the right thing for once, it is still unforgivable that they continue to hesitate on a no brainer decision to release Patty.

The real reason for the Bronx Zoo’s 20 year delay, or decision to not release Happy (now deceased), Patty, and other elephants to sanctuary over the years is simple: Money & Greed. Capitalism commodifies life, and everyone and everything is expendable. Gotta sell the tickets and merch baby! I visited the Bronx Zoo two months ago for this post, and the Bronx Zoo’s additional fee of $7 per person (even on a so-called “Free Wednesday”) for the “Asian Monorail” was another attempt to exploit the public. The ride is basically 43 acres of emptiness, and yet it’s the only way to get a passing glimpse of Patty the Elephant, who is alone, and on display, 7 days a week. I was told by Bronx Zoo employees that they are not allowed to talk about the elephants, or show visitors the enclosure where Patty spends most of her sad and depressing life. Half of the spaces/exhibits on the Asian monorail ride were barren, and another 40% contained various types of wild deer and goats from around the world (I think). Patty the Elephant looked unhappy, and she was pretty much the only feature/attraction of the ride (there were no Bengal tigers as advertised, or any other exotic or unusual animals). Clearly, the tired and beautiful Patty, remains at the Bronx Zoo for economic reasons. Otherwise the excitement level for someone to PAY a visit to the zoo would drop dramatically, and WCS would have far less to $ell and promote. Isn’t capitalism great?

Animal Law

Which raises the question about criminality. Even though there may not be a law against what the Bronx Zoo has been doing for 50+ years to Patty (and other animals, children’s health, and our only planet), does it make their type of abuse any less of a crime? As per the great Ralph Nader, a crime can be considered a crime, even when no law is technically broken or enforced, when an action causes substantial, preventable harm, injuries, or death, particularly through corporate violence, environmental destruction, or government actions. Mr. Nader argues that legal definitions are often manipulated by “serial law violators” in corporations and government to avoid the “crime” label.

According to the State Court Report (re: the death of Happy the Elephant), “The relevant question, Wilson suggested, was not whether Happy is a “person”, she’s plainly not, but whether “the detention of an elephant can ever be so cruel, so antithetical to the essence of an elephant, that the writ of habeas corpus should be made available under the common law.” (Habeas corpus is a legal rule that requires that a prisoner be presented in court, and that the arrester proves that there is proper cause for detaining the prisoner…I had to look it up). This is “part of the fundamental role of a common-law court to adapt the law as society evolves.” he argued…To date, no American court has recognized a habeas right for animals, although such claims have been successful in other countries. Last year, the Colorado Supreme Court rejected a similar claim brought on behalf of five elephants. In Michigan, the state supreme court is currently considering whether to take up an appeal in a case brought on behalf of seven chimpanzees. As Happy’s experience shows, animals often don’t fit easily into a legal world designed by and for humans.”

Thankfully, there are court systems outside of the US that still appear to have souls (at least when it comes to animals). According to the Animal Legal & Historical Center at Michigan State University, the Colombia Supreme Court of Justice determined the following: “In its reasoning, the magistrate judge stated that animals are entitled to rights as sentient beings, not as humans, and that the idea is to insert a morality of respect to counter a global ecological public order where the tendency of men is to destroy the habitat…“The legal, ethical and political purpose is the unavoidable need to create a strong conscience to protect the vital environment for the survival of men, conservation of the environment and as a frontal fight against the irrationality in the man-nature relationship. After long considerations, the chamber stated that it is necessary to modify the concept of ‘subject of rights’ in relation with nature, understanding that who is subject of rights is not necessarily correlatively-bound to have duties.” Holy crap, how cool is that?

Thou Doth Protest Too Much Methinks

WCS (NYC Zoos) released a public statement that once again had me laughing out loud. They announced that despite declaring in 2006 that they would end their elephant program, they are now going to do what is best for Patty. Over and over in their attempts to deceive, WCS kept saying that they are going to do what is best for Patty. The lady (WCS) doth protest too much, methinks? As per the official WCS NewsRoom (I am guessing a “FOX News” level of propaganda for zoo news), “In 2006, the WCS Bronx Zoo announced that it would conclude its elephant program over time…As we determine what is best for Patty, we are carefully evaluating every option based on science, veterinary expertise, and her individual welfare, not public pressure or applying ‘a one size fits all’ for Patty’s care: This isn’t about choosing a place; it’s about choosing what’s best for Patty.” Right. Why would anyone believe them? It has been over 20 years and the Wildlife “Cancellation” Society (WCS) still hasn’t released Patty, or ended their “stolen animals” elephant captivity program at the Bronx Zoo. WCS NYC Zoos don’t do what is best for anyone, except WCS NYC Zoos. They clearly don’t do what is best for animals. And they certainly don’t do what is best for children (again, they lie to kids and zoo visitors about multiple topics, including animal factories, animal suffering, animal captivity, and the climate injustice that is caused by the health-harming animal-based junk food that they peddle at their venues, etc.). WCS also tries to crush human & animal rights activists, and educators, who speak the truth, and encourage these same young people to question everything, and think critically. Do what is best for Patty? Please WCS (NYC Zoos), stop with the nonsense, and give the animals, children, and the world a freakin’ break.

NYC Zoos offer little else but Animal Based junk food in their zoo restaurants/cafes. If the average vegan saves 1 animal life per day (roughly, .3 animals per meal, as vegans also don’t exploit animals via clothing, entertainment, testing, etc.), that would basically mean that every NYC Zoo/Standard American Diet (SAD) meal results in the killing of at least .3 animals. WCS (NYC Zoos) boasts about its 4+ million visitors per year, a significant percentage of whom are children. If each visitor grabs a bite to eat at the zoo (and most zoo visitors have 3+ meals each day), then WCS NYC Zoos would be responsible for the suffering, abuse, and slaughter of at least 1.3 million innocent ANIMALS (sentient beings) per year, just by what they feed their visitors!

I was especially nauseated by the NYC Zoo’s deliberate disinformation game at the Queens Zoo, where children have to guess where pigs, cows, and chickens come from by matching up images of cows, pigs, and chickens, with a little red barn with green pastures…ugh (see image above). For the record, 99% of the meat and dairy products from your local supermarket come from animal factories, where billions of animals are abused and tortured on a daily basis. Overall, WCS NYC Zoos cause enormous harm to animals, children’s health and wellness, and our only planet. And rather than hide their heinous programs, they double and triple down on anyone who exposes the irreversible harm that they are causing. Even online, they seem to have a special level of contempt for anyone who dares to ask basic questions regarding Patty the elephant, animal welfare, the poisonous “food” that they sell to children, families, and other guests, and the destructive impact that they are having on our only Planet.

The so-called Wildlife “Conservation” Society, and its NYC Zoos, sell tons of SAD meals per year that destroy our planet, kill animals (sentient beings), and poison our children. Again, WCS (NYC Zoos) has over 4 million visitors per year (a large percentage of whom are kids), and some of their restaurants/cafes offer public access and don’t require zoo admission. In other words, you don’t even have to buy a zoo ticket to be sickened by WCS (NYC Zoos)!

The menu options at WCS NYC Zoos are a disgrace and contain mostly animal-based junk-food, such as “2 Hot Dogs & Fries ($16.99)”, “Double Cheeseburger & Fries ($15.49)”, “Chicken Tenders & Fries ($15.49)”, “Dippin Dots Ice Cream Balls ($7.99)”, “Pepperoni Pizza ($12.49)”, “Ham & Swiss” “Tuna Salad”, “Ice Cream Bars”, pre-packaged “Chicken Caesar Salad”, “Garden Salad”(which looked two weeks old), a ton of sugary beverages like Coca-Cola, “Wine” ($10.99), “Beer” ($10.99), and well, you get the picture. There were essentially ZERO health promoting, cruelty free, plant-based options (if you don’t wish to harm animals, our only planet, and your health via the food served at WCS NYC Zoos, you are basically stuck with water and pre-packaged wilting lettuce that is marketed as salad). Yikes. WCS has a responsibility not only to young people, but to all animals, and our only planet to do the right thing. Does WCS (NYC Zoos) give a shit? Nope. In fact, they are profiting enormously from making our children sick, harming animals, and destroying our planet. How can any organization claim to be concerned about children, animals and conservation, if it is knowingly feeding its patrons nothing but animal based “foods” that are the #1 cause of death, disease, and disability (e.g., heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity and depression), animal suffering, and climate injustice? What on Polluted Earth is the Wildlife “Conservation” Society (NYC Zoos) thinking? Oh, right, profits. Clearly, organizations like WCS (NYC Zoos) are a big part of our problem regarding truth, justice, and overall wellness for all beings, and our only planet. Millions of people somehow think that WCS (NYC Zoos care), but they don’t. In fact, it’s just the opposite. They are basically poisoning children’s bodies and minds to increa$e their bottom line. Think about the huge missed opportunity. WCS (NYC Zoos) could be leaders in the industry, but instead choose a path of deception, cruelty, and profit$.

4. The Wildlife “Conservation” Society (WCS NYC Zoos) has been Accused of Committing Human Rights Abuses in Africa, Including Rape, Torture, and Murder

As per Survival International (2020), “The US government has halted more than $12 million of funding to WWF, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and other conservation NGOs in a major blow to the conservation industry. The move follows a bipartisan US investigation into whether federal conservation funds supported anti-poaching guards implicated in human rights abuses in Africa…The memo, from the US Deputy Secretary of the Interior Kate MacGregor, contains numerous revelations:
– US government funding was misused by conservation organizations for purposes prohibited under US laws. These include murder, severe torture, multiple rapes, and abuse.
– WWF and other organizations hid the knowledge of these abuses from the US authorities whose funds they were receiving.
– Conservation organizations refused to cooperate with federal investigators; withheld reports that documented the abuses; and were effectively auditing themselves.

5. My Recent NYC Zoo Visits were Awful & Depressing AND not just because the Central Park Zoo Threatened to have me Arrested by the NYPD!

WCS (NYC Zoos) will threaten to arrest you if you try to have pleasant and engaging conversations with zoo volunteers and younger zoo employees (older workers are typically less interested in issues surrounding truth and justice) about the destructive impact of animal agriculture on our only planet. How do I know? Central Park Zoo security guards got ugly-er (more below) and threatened to have me arrested for sharing evidence based data in a friendly way with their younger workers. I realize now that it’s a badge of honor, but it was a drag at the time. The experience reminded me of a recent story where marine biologist, Emma Smart, was arrested in the UK for trying to speak with “naturalist” David Attenborough about the climate crisis (as he dined on seafood at an expensive Michelin rated restaurant in the UK). She was acquitted, and said later that she only wanted to encourage Mr. Attenborough to practice what he preaches, and to consider using his huge platform to raise awareness.

The Bronx Zoo

– Visitors at the Bronx Zoo are not allowed to see the cramped enclosure where Patty the Elephant spends most of her time. When I asked one of the few Zoo workers (name omitted), who was not friendly, why zoo guests were unable to see Patty’s enclosure, she said with a scowl that “the elephants are big and will kill you.” She literally said that in a loud voice, and within earshot of children. When I tried to explain that there are many compassionate people who are concerned about Patty’s welfare, she acted like I wasn’t there. I then said to her, “you are not listening to me, are you?” She said “no”, and shook her head. This Bronx Zoo employee was just a child herself but she had already been indoctrinated with the apparent WCS (NYC Zoos) “GroupThink” philosophy of not speaking to guests about issues that matter, or that require critical thinking (especially as they pertain to Patty the Elephant). We all make mistakes and say dumb things when we are young. As a result, I can only hope that this zoo employee will one day recognize her vapid rudeness and learn from her behavior.
– I then asked a few more zoo workers about Patty the Elephant, and each employee told me in a friendly way, that they were “not allowed to talk about the elephants.” Apparently, they were following the corporate line, and had been instructed to shut down any inquiries about Patty the Elephant. One of the zoo employees did say that concern for animal abuse is just “a matter of opinion”, and that if guests want to ask questions about the enclosures, they will have to talk to zookeepers. When I asked how to find a zookeeper, I was told that they are walking around the zoo and that nobody knows for sure. Yikes. Again, the only way to catch a fleeting glimpse of Patty, is to pay an additional $7 for a “monorail” ride where you might be able to see her for 10-15 seconds. Word of advice, if you do go to a NYC Zoo, try not to ask any meaningful questions. The WCS and NYC Zoos hate that! 🙂
– The food options are shameful. Only animal, human, and Mother Earth destroying junk “food” is available.
– As mentioned above, the Asian Monorail Ride was a disappointment, and only had a handful of animals in about half of the exhibits (other spaces were vacant). Clearly, Patty the Elephant is still at the Bronx Zoo for economic reasons. She is the star attraction. Otherwise, WCS (NYC Zoos) would have far less to market, and merchandise. Sell Baby, Sell! There seems to be a dark, shadowy, unspoken presence in most of the NYC Zoos (I am guessing that it comes from WCS management?). I don’t know how to explain it but it can be felt. Again, it is all about profits over animals, Mother Earth, and our children’s future.

The Queens Zoo

– Although it may be the smallest, NYC’s Queens Zoo may have the highest number of friendly, young, curious employees/volunteers of all NYC zoos. Having said that, they are still guilty of misinforming children, and promoting the propaganda of the Wildlife “Conservation” Society. One of their “Education Station” games was the happy farm with a red barn where children are asked to place farm animals in a warm friendly barnyard. WCS NYC Zoos should be ashamed. As written about superbly in Will Potter’s book, “Little Red Barns: Hiding the Truth, from Farm to Fable”, 99% of the animal products people buy in the supermarket come from factory farms, where millions of animals are raped, tortured and slaughtered on a daily basis. Unfortunately, children walk away from these zoo sanctioned “educational” experiences having more to unlearn, and being further distanced from their innate ability to think independently, and have compassion for all animals.
– There seems to be little regard for the wellness of Queens Zoo’s animals regarding the noise pollution of their surroundings. Queens Zoo is located next to “Terrace on the Park” which is an outstanding venue for weddings and events. Unfortunately, they have an outdoor wedding patio that can get extremely loud with ceremonies, and speakers pointed in all directions. Also, there is a children’s amusement park next to the zoo with an obnoxiously loud roller coaster that must frighten many of the zoo’s inhabitants as well. Lastly, there is something called the Queens Night Market near the NY Hall of Science (a stone’s throw away from the Queens Zoo), which has loud recurring concert events throughout the warmer months.
– The food options are shameful. Only animal, human, and Mother Earth destroying junk “food” is available. To make matters worse, WCS NYC Zoos allow ice cream trucks to (1.) park near the entrances of their zoos, (2.) play their loud annoying ding-dong music, and (3.) prey on children with their toxic food as well.

The Central Park Zoo (CPZ)

– The Wildlife “Conservation” Society (WCS, NYC Zoos) kicked me out of their park, and threatened to have me arrested by the NYPD for having a conversation with their younger employees/volunteers about the destructiveness of Animal Agriculture on our health, Mother Earth, and all of her inhabitants. Basically, I was sharing scientific data, and trying to encourage the young staff members (most of whom were lovely, and interested in learning btw) to think critically. Clearly, WCS and the Central Park Zoo want no part of its staff thinking independently or compassionately! “John from Security” would not provide his last name, or his cohorts’, but immediately approached me (with his gang of 2, none of whom seemed to be the deepest thinkers), and called me by my name. He said that I had to leave the Central Park Zoo property “Now”, or else the Zoo would “physically remove me” and call the NYPD to have me arrested. I am guessing that there was some kind of directive from the higher ups at WCS, as the Central Park Zoo seemed to be ready, and waiting (I had visited their other zoos in previous weeks). Anyway, “John” tried to stare me down multiple times, and even put his hands on my person (even though I told him not to) in an attempt to intimidate, and chest bump…I am guessing (his attitude was reminiscent of a school-yard bully with an intellect to match). I told “John” to call the NYPD and that I would bring up charges because I was doing nothing wrong. If WCS feels threatened by someone myself for speaking the truth about Big Ag (and how it is arguably the greatest threat to the survival of our species), and the wellness of the Bronx Zoo’s Patty the Elephant (see above), imagine what the level of “imposed ignorance” must be on their employees/volunteers, and how they must treat animals when nobody’s looking? I visited three NYC zoos in the last two months, and only once did I see a single captive animal look happy. They all seemed either numb, anxious, overwhelmed, miserable, or depressed. In fact, many of the animals that were actually present in their exhibits (again, a large number of the “attractions” were empty spaces), showed various forms of zoochosis and/or pacing. According to Faunalytics, “pacing” is indicative of an animal who is coping with stress by “disengaging from their environment” through repetitive, goal-less behavior.

And if that wasn’t enough…
– As I was leaving the Central Park Zoo , and there was a break in the action, I briefly spoke with another group of young employees/volunteers who were being led by an older 35+ year old zoo employee (I am guessing). I mentioned to the group that I was told to leave the park for having conversations with staff members about Patty the Elephant, animal agriculture, and the toxic food being sold in the Zoo’s cafe. I reminded them, in a friendly way, of the importance of education, and thinking independently. It was then that the older staff employee rolled her eyes and said out loud to her group that I was “educating the educated” and started walking away. A couple of the young staff employees took her cue, rolled their eyes, and followed their leader. We were all, coincidentally, heading in the same direction (to the exit), so I asked the “leader” if she thought it was important to tell children the truth, and for all of us to act with compassion and our conscience? With a forced smile, she told me that she sleeps well at night, and that the door that her group was about to go through was for authorized personnel only (it was adjacent to the zoo’s exit). I am not sure if her arrogance exceeded her ignorance or vice versa. Either way, it was a bummer. It was a rare moment of feeling discouraged by young people about our species’ future. Young people usually give me the most hope! What happens to individuals when they become more motivated by money and power, than by the welfare of animals, children, and our only planet? Like Professor Norman Finkelstein, I don’t believe it’s possible to be rich, or powerful, or both, without being morally depraved. For the record, most younger zoo employees/volunteers were delightfully curious, and open to new perspectives and scientific data!
– Interestingly, my notes for my most recent CPZ encounter included the following: “Central Park Zoo “leaders”: The Dangers of GroupThink..A Marriage of Arrogance & Ignorance – Link from previous post on “collective effervescence” in sports.”
– In her frustration of seeing so few animals in the Central Park Zoo exhibits, a middle aged Central Park Zoo visitor asked out loud, in a laughing manner, “Why are the zoo employees telling us not to harass the animals, when there are no animals in the exhibits to harass?”

Even the WCS Online Experience is Deflating.

*Underwhelming Online WCS (NYC Zoos) Experience:
Stonewalling: Whether it was in person at the NYC Zoos, or online through “WCS Guest Services” where 10 of my original 11 Questions were ignored, WCS NYC Zoos seem to have contempt for the public, and anyone who dares inquire about their actions and policies. The disdain for outsiders who question their decisions must originate from the top and trickle down to the older managers/employees. Most of my original questions to WCS Guest Services pertained to Patty the Elephant (Release date? Enrichment programs?), the harmful/unsustainable food that is served at NYC Zoos, and why NYC Zoos don’t have Free Days for NYC residents. I paired down my questions a few times, and still had only one or two answered (albeit, in a half-hearted way).
For example, One of the questions asked about the toxic, animal, human, and planet harming food served at all NYC Zoos, and WCS (NYC Zoos) basically ignored the question by talking about how their napkins are made from recycled paper!

“There have been public statements made by the Bronx Zoo regarding our elephant management. Most recently on July 7 (link) . You may refer to that for the information that is being shared regarding Patty. Other inquiries and details will not be addressed.”
Btw, the link that was provided by Guest Services still didn’t answer any of my elephant questions. 🙂

6. In 2025, WCS (NYC Zoos) received over $175 Million from US & NYC taxpayers, and its top executives were paid over $1 million a year, Yet NYC Zoos Offer No Free Days to Local Residents

The previous CEO of the Wildlife “Conservation” Society, earned over $1.5 million per year (Dr. Cristian Samper, President and CEO, WCS). The current CEO of WCS, Adam Falk, earned over $1.2 million in his previous role with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
I looked online with multiple search engines, but couldn’t find any information about the current salary of Adam Falk (including all forms of compensation). However, it is safe to assume that his salary with WCS will exceed $1.5 million (other top execs at WCS make over $1 million as well). Considering that the majority of Americans living check to check, and are one emergency away from financial ruin (50% of US children are living at or below poverty), how can the Wildlife “Conservation” Society not offer a single free day to NYC residents? WCS (NYC Zoos) normalizes and profits from violence and abuse, and has no problem paying its top executives million dollar salaries, while it also accepts hundreds of millions of dollars each year in taxpayer money and other appropriations. Once again, we see that WCS (NYC Zoos) operates like a criminal entity, and has zero regard for the wellness of people, animals, and our only planet.

What does Non-Profit Mean?

The Wildlife “Conservation” Society (NYC Zoos) is not alone with regard to being a non-profit scam that exploits others, while providing little social benefit. In fact, overall, WCS appears to cause far more harm than good. The term Non-Profit is a tax term for many organizations that provides a ton of advantages (tax exemption from federal income taxes (lower operating costs), eligibility for grants, limited personal liability for directors and officers, etc.).
For example, here are 5 “non-profit healthcare” organizations and the salaries paid to their top executives in fiscal year 2017:
1. Banner Health (Phoenix), paid its top executive $21.6 million.
2. Memorial Hermann Health (Houston) paid its top executive $18.2 million.
3. Ascension St. Louis (St. Louis) paid its top executive $13.1 million.
4. Kaiser Foundation (Oakland, Calif.) paid its top executive $10.7 million.
5. Northwestern Memorial HealthCare (Chicago) paid its top executive $10.6 million.

Despite most Americans financial struggles, NYC Zoos do not offer a single free day. The Bronx Zoo is the only NYC Zoo that claims to have a free day, but as is typical with WCS, it is only marketing as there is no actual Free Day. A friend of mine who has a beautiful one year old son recently visited the Bronx Zoo on a “Free Wednesday” and came away tired and deflated. As per my friend, “They call it a Free Day but it’s not Free.” I agree. I visited the Bronx Zoo on a “Free Wednesday” a couple of months ago
because I wanted to speak with Zoo workers, and see the enclosure where Patty the Elephant spent most of her time. It cost an additional $7 for a chance to see Patty for a few seconds. “Free Wednesdays” at NYC’s Bronx Zoo is like winning a free ticket to a movie theater and discovering that you only have access to the lobby, and that you are not allowed to see any of the featured films! Again, the only way to see Patty the Elephant and other top “attractions” on “Free Wednesdays” is to pay for additional access/rides (in this case, something called “the Asian Monorail”). Dishonest practices seem to be the norm for WCS (NYC Zoos), as they once again, deceitfully place profits over animals, people, and Mother Earth.

How bad is it for Most US Americans? At a time when 1 in 4 kids in New York City are food insecure (1 in 5 nationally), and
114,000 US Americans will die this year due to lack of health insurance, the United States will spend another $1.5 trillion on its war machine (to continue its Genocide in Gaza, and mass murder campaigns abroad).

I love Stephen Semler’s work. Here are two more of his powerful graphs (that I will definitely be sharing in the classroom as well). Lifetime criminal Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act kicked 5 million people off of the SNAP Food Assistance program, while it also sent another $75 billion to ICE.

Shame on WCS (NYC Zoos) for Playing Games, and NOT Offering Actual Free Days for NYC Residents!

I didn’t expect to learn, while conducting research for this blog, that NYC’s Wildlife “Conservation” Society (NYC Zoos) really does seem to operate like a criminal organization, in part, by marketing (disguising) itself as a champion of environmental justice, and animal & human rights. I laughed out loud when I read the Mission and Vision statement of WCS & their NYC Zoos. As a courtesy to readers of this post, I have added bold text in parenthesis to the WCS Mission and Vision statements to make them far more Truthful, and Historically Accurate. 🙂

As per the Wildlife “Conservation” Society (WCS) website (my edits are in parenthesis):

OUR MISSION
WCS saves (destroys) wildlife and wild places worldwide through science, conservation action, education (and murder), and inspiring people to value nature (and to NOT think critically & compassionately).

WCS envisions a world where wildlife thrives in healthy lands and seas (even though we are destroying those healthy lands and seas by fully supporting the animal agriculture industry), valued by societies that embrace and benefit from the diversity and integrity of life on earth (integrity of life for worthy individuals only, like billionaires, and top executives of WCS whose salaries often exceed $1 million per year).

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) harnesses the power of four zoos and an aquarium in New York City (as well as massive misinformation campaigns, and WCS funded attacks on dissent) and a global conservation program to protect wildlife and wild places (where we have been accused of funding rape, murder, and the erasure of indigenous people and their ancestral lands).

We inspire (exploit) millions of visitors at our urban wildlife parks (including the renowned Bronx Zoo (where we abuse elephants), Central Park Zoo (where we abuse visitors..see above), Queens Zoo (where we offer no free days for struggling local NYC residents even though we receive tens of millions of dollar$ in NYC taxpayer support), Prospect Park Zoo, and New York Aquarium) to (mis)-understand, and to care and advocate for nature (so long as it doesn’t conflict with the financial gains of WCS). Our WCS Global Conservation Program is the world’s largest and longest-running field conservation program, partnering with Indigenous Peoples (who again, we have been accused of brutalizing), local communities (can you say contempt?), governments (finally, a truthful statement), and other NGOs (many of whom, like WCS, also pay their CEOS and other executives well over $1 million per year!). Our four zoos, the aquarium, and field programs are deeply interconnected, each strengthening and informing the other to drive impact (on our PROFIT$ of course!).

Again, the WCS vision and mission statement made me laugh out loud. 🙂

Exiting the Bronx Zoo for the last time?

The Bottom Line? I hadn’t visited a NYC zoo in over ten years but I thought that it would be a good idea for the sake of animals, young people, and this post to check them out once again. I will likely never visit a NYC zoo again, nor will I advocate for bringing my students there either. I will take them instead to animal sanctuaries where most people truly care about ALL animals, and visitors are encouraged to be compassionate, think critically, and question everything. I have been lucky enough to visit animal sanctuaries and zoos in different parts of the world (e.g., Europe, Africa, Argentina, Costa Rica, Germany, China, etc), and in my experience, sanctuaries are far more humane than zoos. I have always had mixed feelings about zoos and understood that with many zoos, there is an opportunity to protect animals, educate the masses, and help children to learn to love all animals. Unfortunately, hardly any of that seems to be happening at the WCS run NYC Zoos.

I am convinced that the Wildlife “Conservation” Society (NYC Zoos) is run mostly by depraved individuals. How strange is it that the Wildlife “Conservation” Society claims to have all of these “conservation” projects going on, yet there is no mention of its human rights abuses (alleged), or again, the elephant in the room (pun intended), animal agriculture. NYC Zoos not only ignore animal factories but triple down to exploit Animals, Children, and Mother Earth for the sake of profit$! They don’t care about our brothers, sisters and CHILDREN (at home or overseas), or animal suffering, or climate injustice. WCS (NYC Zoos) Indeed operates like a criminal enterprise. For the record, WCS has still not been acquitted for its role in funding Human Rights abuses in Africa.

Imagine the tremendous game-changing opportunity that WCS (NYC Zoos) has deliberately avoided. They could inspire the world, and set an amazing standard but their “leaders” probably lost their sense of decency and compassion years ago (otherwise, how else would they be where they are today?). And to think that I actually offered to help them transition to plant-based options, and more sustainable, evidence based practices. Lucky for me, they completely ignored my offer. 🙂

My intention for this blog, from a human and animal rights perspective, was to try and present a not too harsh view of NYC Zoos, and to try and find the positives (e.g., years ago, the Central Park Zoo educated the masses on same-sex penguins). Cool stuff, right? Unfortunately, it was impossible. WCS (NYC Zoos) doesn’t appear to have a good side. It is a shame too, because most of the young zoo volunteers and workers that I met were smart, curious, compassionate, and inspiring. Unfortunately, the over 35 crowd, especially at the Central Park Zoo, had a bully-like mentality, and their arrogance and willful ignorance was palpable (trickle down effect?). My guess is that the young zoo employees either fall in line and become mindless obedient workers, or they maintain their integrity and find other less glamorous gigs. Again, truth, dissent, and critical thinking are not allowed at the NYC Zoos. Otherwise, the Wildlife “Conservation” Society’s whole immoral (and often illegal) operation would be exposed and undermined.

All Children are Our Children, and Each Child is a “Small Universe”

All Children are indeed our children and we are failing them all over the world. The bad guys are winning, and it’s becoming harder to find reasons for hope. US American children are not being taught the meaning of compassion and empathy, and how to think independently. They are instead being taught how to be obedient workers, celebrity worshippers, and consumers. Education is key, and animal rights is one of the biggest social justice issues of our lifetime (e.g., factory farming (animal factories) is one of the worst crimes in human history). One of the big ideas of this website is to show how greed, and our unsustainable toxic food system, negatively impact human health, animal welfare, environmental justice, and peace on Earth. Unfortunately, the Wildlife “Conservation-Cancellation” Society (WCS, NYC Zoos) fails miserably on all accounts.
