Avatar, and the Power of Film

Two Cent Movie Review: Have you seen James Cameron’s “Avatar”? Avatar is a film about environmental justice, love, speciesism, equality, militarism, sustainability, and the hazards of capitalism. Phew. Oh yeah, it is also a ton of fun. It is still the greatest movie experience that I have ever had (thank you IMAX), as I walked out after my first viewing like a giddy teenager (I returned to the same theater two days later to watch it again!). Avatar was the highest grossing film of all time until the relatively mindless and franchise driven movie Avengers grossed $2.797 billion (vs. Avatar’s 2009 gross of $2.790 billion). Avatar inspired Palestinans to paint themselves blue (like the Na’vi beings in the film), as they protested the expansion of settlements by the Israeli government. The film was also referenced by many climate activists in South America in their fight to protect ancestral lands. The special effects of Avatar were groundbreaking, and all of the ideas that were explored in the film (think floating, thriving ecosystems) were based on science. Wow. James Cameron is a brilliant filmmaker (and a vegan btw). I just learned that he is currently in New Zealand working with a team of thousands on creating Avatar 2, 3 and 4. Hopefully, the sequels can somehow live up to the standards of the first installment. Let the giddiness begin! The bottom line? Avatar is only the best flick of all time. Yep, I said it. I love this film.
